I remember this because my ex flatmate requested me to accompany him to Prada boutique as he wanted to buy one suit. For quality, from my personal experience, they are quite equal but, Gucci is a lot more expensive than Prada. The main reason for that is Gucci made quite a name for itself during the time it was under the direction of Tom Ford.
Prada suits are made by Belvest. Armani Black Label is made by Vestimenta and is of good quality, though not really comparable to Kiton or Oxxford. Bottega is of high quality but I'm not sure who makes their tailored clothing - I would suspect along the lines of St. Andrews or Cantarelli. That alpaca Prada sounds great, I'm not surprised it draws compliments. Really, I think more people appreciate stylish classics than some on this forum would have you believe. By that I mean things like striped suits, bold+dark outerwear, cravats, evening clothes, etc. Anything other than the staid sacky suit from Brookie Bros. I believe that their higher-end and MTM suits are made by Belvest, or at least were at one time. Does anybody know who makes their lower end (mostly fused).
I checked out the Prada made-to-measure program. All suits are fully canvassed and made in Milan. Prices range from $1,700 to $16,000. They have several suit cuts available, one-, two-, and three-button coats, functional buttonholes, zip or button fly. There are three fabric books. The most. Gucci has a fused and fully canvassed line (both made by Zegna). The canvassed pieces have a higher MSRP and are made to Zegna mainline standards, imo.
The thing is, you're a fairly short guy (no offense; I'm in the same predicament), and the suits made by Dior, YSL, and Prada all cater to tall, model-esque people.
